The Vinyl Countdown # 212

Lizzo, Cuz I Love You (2019)
Every year I try to keep one (or two) favourite albums where I don’t review them. I just listen – and love – and buy the LP. Almost a time-capsule thing…I have to really like the album of course, I wouldn’t own stuff just because it was popular and marked a moment in time. Sometimes – often in fact – these albums have been rather obscure. This year it happens to be one of the more popular “bangers” – Lizzo really arrived in 2019 despite already having a couple of albums out and some EPs and singles. But the material from this new album is what launched her into the big time. And that’s a bit of an old-school model in a way. Which wasn’t planned at all. It’s just what has happened. The album is a mix of R’n’B and hip-hop and has such a feel-good vibe that for me it’s been impossible not to get caught up in it. There’s been hype. And no doubt there’ll be – or has been – backlash. But none of that matters to me. What matters – always – is the music. And I have just enjoyed the Lizzo album as a great bunch of songs. Something I hope will be the case in years to come. And if not, we’ll always have 2019. And this is easily one of my favourites of the year. And I feel no real need to unpack it any further than that.

Sample Track: Juice
The Vinyl Countdown is a document of every LP I listen to, brand new discoveries and old-old favourites; extremely pre-loved, previously abandoned or with the shrink-wrap having just been removed it’s all here at The Vinyl Countdown
