Galaxie 500, This Is Our Music (1990)
I bought this a couple of years ago – I’d enjoyed some Galaxie 500 and I had really enjoyed Dean Wareham’s book, Black Postcards. Also, I was interviewing Dean about his 13 Most Beautiful show. The album was a handy reference – as well as, you know, a great fucking record. A year on it became a great reference again – I interviewed Dean again. He was back to play some shows featuring Galaxie 500 material. I reviewed the Wellington gig. It was great. And I’m pretty sure I’m going to head to the Auckland show. All the while I’ve enjoyed this album – it’s my favourite of the Galaxie 500 records. It’s the only one I own – but it’s my favourite, definitely. I love the Yoko Ono cover. And I really like Dean Wareham’s way of rewriting Velvet Underground songs in his own way. Part shoegazer/part indie-meets-subverted-powerpop. I like it a lot. You’ll see here the setlist from the Wellington show Dean and Britta did. Britta did a decent cover of the Yoko song. And a Bob Dylan cover too. I met her after the show. She seemed very quiet/shy/low-key. She used to be the voice of Jem. I bet she gets sick of people mentioning that. (Oops).
Sample Track: Fourth Of July
