Toots & The Maytals, Knock Out! (1981)
The song Beautiful Womanwas everywhere when I was a kid. I remember it well. I didn’t particularly like it. Nor did I know who it was by. It was just everywhere. It was years – and possibly even a few more years after that – before I found out it was Toots & The Maytals. By the time I found out, fortunately, I already liked Toots for a bunch of other things. The ‘real’ stuff. So sad, recently to hear of Toots Hibbert’s passing. When I bought this album – online – Toots was still alive. When I took delivery of it he was gone. I had been thinking about how great he was, how great the band was, and how I had only ever really owned material by the group on CD. It was time to change that. I like Beautiful Woman a lot more now than I ever did. And yet I didn’t even know that song was going to be on here until I took ownership of it. Fortunately, there’s plenty of better songs than that. But it was a massive hit here in NZ. Not sure if it really meant anything much anywhere else.
