The Vinyl Countdown # 178

Wayne & Shuster, Selected Short Subjects (1961)
One of the things I love about comedy on vinyl is how dated it is; so you imagine an era when it was The Entertainment – you were invited around to hear the chuckles and join in with them. Maybe a polite dinner, some chat, and then the latest comedy record. It’s one of the funniest things to me about records – imagining that. The material, too, just generally so dated (okay there’s one or two old comedy records out there where it still works). This one though? Not really. Johnny Wayne and Frank Shuster were comedy duo, Wayne & Shuster. Canadian comis that worked on radio and TV and as a live act. These short radio sketches aren’t really funny at all (now). Maybe they never were – but you can admire the character work and some of the set-ups. If you stand back and try to place yourself in the era when this was relevant.

Sample Track: Whiskey Taster
The Vinyl Countdown is a document of every LP I listen to, brand new discoveries and old-old favourites; extremely pre-loved, previously abandoned or with the shrink-wrap having just been removed it’s all here at The Vinyl Countdown
