The Vinyl Countdown # 1778

V/A, Atlantic Records: History Of Rhythm And Blues Vocal Groups (1983)

I bought this LP at the start of the year, I was going to be DJing some rock’n’roll/R’n’B-type affair and whenever I do a DJ set I like to have one new thing in the crate – it doesn’t have to be brand new (as was the case here, second-hand, $8. Cheers!) I just like to have one new thing that I’ll look forward to playing. And then, as often seems to be the way, I don’t actually play anything at all from that one new thing. That was the case this night – but it’ll come in handy for a DJ-set at some stage no doubt, and anyway I’ve enjoyed it several times, just playing it right through at home. It’s got – for a start – that killer tune by The Coasters – Down In Mexico (always handy to have that on vinyl). And it’s got tunes from The Drifters, The Chords, The Cardinals and a bunch of other acts; all Atlantic stuff obviously, all from between 1954-1957. It’s a superb wee comp…I’m glad I picked it up.

Sample Track: Sh Boom (The Chords)

The Vinyl Countdown is a document of every LP I listen to, brand new discoveries and old-old favourites; extremely pre-loved, previously abandoned or with the shrink-wrap having just been removed it’s all here at The Vinyl Countdown
