Def Leppard, Pyromania (1983)
I think Photograph is a killer song – and that’s entirely the reason I bought this album. Oh, I have no shame in admitting I like a bit of Def Leppard. I was obsessed with Hysteria when it was released (I bought the tape and got a free badge with it; that stayed on my pencil case through intermediate and in to high school). I then grew out of any interest in the band – pretty much. But I am glad I went to the gig in 2008. They really delivered. A greatest hits set from a band that sounded fantastic – it was a super show. I was offered an interview on the day – but no idea who it was going to be with; just a band member. It would be decided on the day. So I get there – on time, but only just. And they tell me I’ll be speaking with Rick Allen – the drummer. My immediate concern is to whether he has still got his right arm or his left: will he shake hands with me normally, or do a sort of Shane Warne flipper-thing. Well, he had the correct/right hand to shake with – and was super nice and interesting – my review of the gig/interview with Allen is here. Anyway, I took this album up – and my copy of Hysteria also – for Allen to sign. And he did. (I’d bought a new copy of Hysteria but the Pyromania is a second-hander).
