Aretha Franklin, Aretha Now (1968)
You really can’t go wrong with the early Aretha Franklin albums – and that golden period 1967-1972 – amazing. What a line-up of songs and musicians. What great choices Aretha made – as a vocalist, as a writer, as a song interpreter, as a player; from the choice of her band-leaders and the musicians she worked with on down – it’s all perfect. Some were choices made for her rather than by her but what a great run of albums. I bought this album fairly recently. Kept it sealed for a while. Opened it on a whim recently. Listened to it by myself. Great album – it starts with Think, Say A Little Prayer, See Saw – I mean how can it not be great! I love Roger Hawkins’ drumming on this album too. Great player, always served the song. So many good musicians on this album. So much good stuff here – and such a perfect pop record as well as being a perfect soul record. Great way to start a Sunday. Great way to start – or end – any day.
