Eric Clapton, The Cream Of Eric Clapton (1987)
Okay, whilst I will hear plenty of bad words about Eric Clapton (and have uttered several myself, and even more so when listening to just about anything he’s released in the last 35 years) I will not hear a bad word about this compilation. Sure, there are some slightly odd choices (especially on side two) but this snapshot is what gave me some understanding of the man; particularly that power-trio that was so important. Oh and I guess that song with the long piano bit too. This album was so big in my life when it was released. As a 10, 12, 15, 17 year old this album just blew me away. And in the right mood, at the right time, once a year or so, I can sit back now and still dig the hell out of every single track (yes even some of the odd choices on side two) on this record. Again, it’s one the whole family loved – and that’s a big part of the love for this album too. We in fact travelled to see Clapton perform (in 1990) as a whole family. And that wouldn’t have happened without this LP.
