The result of a dig at home – this album. What I mean by that is on a recent return to HB for Christmas and to see the folks and other family I was tasked with sorting out the two cabinets of vinyl that I had left at home over a decade ago when I didn’t have a turntable so didn’t need to have my records in the same city as me. Since then the collection has grown and I have picked up some of my records from Havelock, but not all. So on this trip I sorted through a few – well all of them actually. Man there was some rubbish there – you’ll be hearing about more of that on The Vinyl Countdown with time, no doubt. I filled a couple of crates but did not have room in the car to transport them this time – so I just grabbed half a dozen; some of the ones that appealed. And one of the chosen few was this: the second Hello Sailor album. It plays just fine though there’s a slight jump right at the start when you first drop the needle. Beyond that it’s all go/all good. What a great album – it’s been years since I’ve heard this. Shit, Hello Sailor was just a great band weren’t they? A really, really great band. I’ve no idea where this album comes from in the scheme of things; what I mean is I have no idea how this entered my collection. I had (absolutely) forgotten all about it. But I did used to listen to it a decade or so ago. But I’ve no memory of where I first found it or how it came to be a record I own. Usually I know/remember the story. Even if I don’t at first, a play through of the album in question and my story around it comes back. Not this time. But I was happy to have it back to have a hoon on it. Some great tunes and killer performances. I never got to see Hello Sailor live – musta been a great experience. Well, it might not be the same but I’m gonna see ‘em tonight. Maybe I’ll wish I hadn’t – maybe they’ll be as good as they ever were. Will it be likely that actually the result is somewhere in the middle. Who knows at this stage? But I am glad to have Pacifica Armour back in the rack.
