Th’ Dudes, So You Wanna Be A Rock’n’Roll Star (1982)
First of all my brother had the split CD with this and six songs from Hello Sailor. And we loved it (the whole family loved it). I was, at the time, more taken with Th’ Dudes portion than the Sailor stuff. But that was because I was (and always have been) a Dave Dobbyn fan. Now, if I had that CD, I reckon I’d be more in to the Hello Sailor material (nothing against Th’ Dudes, even though I hated the way it was th’ instead of the. I still like their material too, just been enjoying some Sailor lately). At the time though I was still buying tapes and I found the six-track mini-album by Th’ Dudes (I never found the Hello Sailor portion on tape). All those great songs that I just loved. So even though I have the other Dudes LPs now – including a copy of Where Are The Boys? signed by Dobbyn – I had to get this when I saw it. It was some years ago now but I’ve recently started listening to it again. A perfect wee snapshot. An album (or EP or mini-album) that I love dearly. I learned these songs on the drums. I took this (on tape) to the beach. I used to stand around shooting basketball hoops listening to this and the Hello Sailor half (via my brother’s CD copy) and I reckon every song’s a gem every time. Also, I like the idea that a band basically released a Greatest Hits EP. Don’t you think more bands should be this honest?
