Prince, Prince (1979)
It’s like picking favourite children – seriously, it is. I know a lot of people talk about how Prince was only ever good from about 1982-1987 – a vital period. But I go from this album through to 1989 before I notice anything even close to unnecessary. And when I first started collecting Prince music (on CD) this was an early highlight. To this day I Wanna Be Your Lover is my favourite Prince song – well, it’s on the list (again, it’s like picking children). And I always loved the crunch to the riff of Bambi. This is such an explosive, dynamic album – a great follow up. He’s basically saying oh, so you didn’t need to buy my debut album. Well, I beg to differ – or at least try this! And man, it’s all there. Ballads, schmaltz, rock, pop, R’n’B. So white and so black all at once – those lines already a perfect blur. And that blistering solo at the end of Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad? He was listening to Fleetwood Mac I think. Lindsey Buckingham would have been proud of that one.
