Always thought Robert Cray was a lot better than a lot of people think; including himself. His records, increasingly, under-represent (and under-value) his talents. But the first few still have some soulful vocals and some stinging guitar lines. The soul/R’n’B horn-drenched material of the 1990s became all too interchangeable. I have no special connection to this – musically. But this and, before it, Bad Influence (which I prefer) were very special records for me growing up. My mum bought them on a whim – it was music the whole family dug. Every time I play anything by Cray, anything, I think about how the whole family was digging this. All of us together. And that’s pretty cool. I reckon a Robert Cray gig would be pretty sweet to see these days.
Sample Track: Smoking Gun
