Peter Gabriel, Peter Gabriel [Melt] (1980)
I was a greatest hits-kinda fan first. And that was how I got on to Peter Gabriel. Actually So was the thing that really introduced me to him – given my age. Then it was back to Genesis. And then to the soundtracks and then the first four self-titled albums. I love all the Gabriel stuff; dude’s a wizard. But this is definitely one of my favourites. The big track was Biko and it’s funny but Games Without Frontiers didn’t excerpt so well (for me) hearing it as part of the hits comps – but it’s one of my favourites now. A great way to kick off side two. (Never been that fussed with Biko, beyond the point it was making). I guess the best-of route only ever worked as an introduction for Gabriel, because as much as there were big singles and big – big – videos (and huge shows) he is (was) an albums-man. And I like that. And I like his albums. This one is getting a lot of plays at the moment. I find I’m more interested in his music, currently, than ever before.
Sample Track: Intruder
