Simon & Garfunkel, Parsley, Sage, Rosemary And Thyme (1966)
It might not be the very first time – but it was one of the very first times that I recognised the album-title as coming from a lyric rather than just repeating a song’s title. Yeah. Riveting. (Sorry). But it’s also just the truth of the situation – an early musical memory for me. Ma and Pa introduced us to Simon & Garfunkel and then on to Paul Simon’s solo work from there. And I’m glad they did. With just a few albums in a few short years you are probably best off with the greatest hits album (whichever one you pick, there are several – far too many in fact). But, that said, the albums all have a charm about them, as albums. And this one, the duo’s third, is one of their better ones. Take it in, listen to the whole album, 34 minutes, it’s tight; great songs. I don’t know: you either got hooked into this stuff, grew up with it, loved it. Or you didn’t. I’m glad I did. I don’t feel the need to listen to S&G all that often these days but there’s a lot of happy memories and some deceptively simple songs, beautiful songs, clever songs. Lovely stuff.
