Billy Cobham, Picture This (1987)
I need help. I mean, really. Because, even though I’ve been burned before – many times, in fact – I will still buy an album by a drummer I love even if I know I shouldn’t. And with Billy Cobham there’s a couple of albums that are worth having with him as the leader, one being a best-of compilation. And then, sure, get anything with him when he’s part of the band. But I bought this. And there’s one reason and one reason only why I bought this album: it has a cover of Prince’s song, Sign O’ The Times. Oh, it’s awful. And I knew it would be awful. But still, I had to have it. I knew I was in for a world of – at best – soft-porno soundtrack shtick and talented session players figuring that taste was just something you had in your mouth (and that they’d all had that slapped out of them from working with Miles at any rate). I get this thing home and I put it on. And it’s so busy and oh so awful. So truly horrific. Will I keep it? Of course! Did I mention that I need help?
