David Bowie, Tonight (1984)
God only knows – I should think – what David Bowie thought he was doing covering God Only Knows. It’s almost the work of an impersonator, and maybe, by 1984, that’s exactly what David Bowie was – a David Bowie Impersonator. Someone else might tell you that’s all he’s ever been. I can’t tell you I have a soft spot for this album – but I can tell you (as should be obvious from this post) that I own it. Heck, sometimes I even play it. You can defend Let’s Dance (I even had a go here). But you can’t really defend Tonight. That’s the beauty of being a fan though right – you don’t have to defend, you shouldn’t defend and you should celebrate the ugliness and stupidity, the bum notes of the career, the shitty stuff. Just as you should celebrate the triumphs. At least I didn’t spend a lot on this copy. What a surprise that there are – often – second hand copies of this one about, eh?
