Curtis Mayfield, Curtis/Live! (1971)
One of the great revelations for me was discovering Curtis Mayfield. After early Impressions material and best-ofs and a box-set and – from there – a general immersion it was this double live album – I had a reissued CD – that became my best friend; my world, the reason to recommend Curtis to anyone, to just soak up everything about the man. This live album hinted at the huge influence on Prince and Lenny Kravitz and so many others and it featured a stunning set of songs – a great band – a kickass Carpenters cover (always good to have one of those in your repertoire) and so much of the soul of this man, the political raps, the heartfelt balladry, that dynamic rhythm guitar. Shortly after I discovered this album Curtis Mayfield died – that hooked me into his sound even further, his death was quite profoundly sad for me. And it seemed like no one else around me cared about it at all. I’ve only just bought this LP recently – but it’s been on my “list” for a long time; been eyeing it up in the store for months on end. So happy to have it.
