Billy Cobham, The Best of Billy Cobham (1980)
One of my all-time favourite CDs – one I listened to so much as a teenager, particularly – was this version of a Billy Cobham best-of, with all the best stuff he’s known/revered for like Stratus – and Snoopy’s Search/Red Baron. I was in awe of this guy and loved this sound. So many years on I find another album called The Best of Billy Cobham – all different tracklisting – so of course I buy it, I’m keen to hear more stuff from this guy. Well, it was a bit of a dud. But if you hold onto something long enough you sometimes find a way in. Was playing some records on Thursday night at Motel and I played Pocket Change off this record. Good tune, played at the right time, so I’ll hang onto this – find a few gems and it’s no longer the bad Billy Cobham record I own. This is.
Sample Track: Pocket Change
