John Rowles, Rowled Gold (1976)
The story goes, a woman from the record company was off to meet John Rowles – this is like early 2000s, some meeting to discuss a new compilation or something. And they’re going for lunch but rather than meet at the lunch place he asks her to meet at his house and they agree on a time. She arrives a fraction late and he’s still in the shower. And she’s told to wait for him to come down the stairs when he’s ready. A few minutes pass and he comes down dressed only in a towel – but his hair is perfectly in place and there’s the waft of various gels and sprays, deodorants and (probably) that Sex Panther Cologne. The chest is waxed and it’s clear he’s been waiting around to make his entrance as John Towels, sorry John Rowles. Anyway, I like that story. I imagine in the John Rowles world that kind of move works, in fact I heard that 60% of the time it works all the time.
