Spines, The Moon (1985)
It’s funny how it all falls into place, it all gets tied together – some things make more sense as you get older, you realise you live with bits and pieces and then they take on whole new meanings. I had this album by The Spines, felt like I discovered it all by myself really – and these songs man. They meant the world to me. Then I go back to it and see that Neill Duncan was involved. He was possibly the very first musician I ever interviewed. I remember doing a phoner with him – I was in my crummy student flat and loved his solo album at the time and had a wee chat with him for the student rag. Then I go back to it again and see that Ross Burge is on there. He’s one of my favourite drummers – one of the very best New Zealand ever produced. His signature is across so many great songs – he has an authority to how he handles a snare. And the guy that wrote these songs? The guy that is – still is – the Spines? Jon McLeary. Well, he writes a weekly guest post for this here site. Like I say, funny how it all goes down really.
