Curtis Mayfield, Curtis (1970)
I guess my introduction to Curtis Mayfield was The Beastie Boys’ Paul’s Boutique (samples) and then after that it was this incredible boxset which sent me through the catalogue and I had most of the key titles on CD and I’m trying to find them all now on vinyl and they’re rather hard to come by – though this one is always about. And so it was time to add this to the collection – a phenomenal debut. You can go back through the late 1960s albums by The Impressions and it all makes sense that this is where Curtis was going – but it’s still a landmark debut, an amazing scope, something bigger, better and deeper than even the very best moments within the seeds of psychedelic funk and soul that are on those Impressions albums. Curtis would keep writing for his old group but it was on and up from here. Movin’ on up!
