Larry Adler, Larry Adler with Quintette of The Hot Club of France (1938)
In my teenage years two names that I got hooked on – that seemed weird I guess, to others anyone – never to me, were Larry Adler and the Quintette du Hot Club de France (the Quintette boasting both Stephane Grappelli and Django Reinhardt – I found out about them separately then discovered they’d made a lot of music together; leading me to the Quintette). Adler’s name was shown to me by my mum (she also introduced me to Grappelli, I found out about Django because he was mentioned by ever second guitarist interviewed in the pages of Guitar World in the early 90s). Anyway – amazing music. All of it. It blows my mind to listen to it. Then. And now. So when I found this wee EP just recently I had to add it – charming, virtuosic, beautiful. I love it. It was such a good find.
