Brook Benton, My Country (1966)
When I interviewed Tony Joe White a few years ago he told me that it was the highlight of his life to have a song covered by Brook Benton – and that Benton’s version of that song (Rainy Night In Georgia) was “definitive” – it was, according to the song’s writer, “the best”. He drawled that it was the greatest thing that had happened to him and that there was no finer singer. You listen to Brook Benton and it’s easy to come away with that thought – no finer singer. Especially when you get his music on at the right time. This morning I gave this record a whirl – Benton singing country songs, standards. Wow – what a stunning start to the day. Put me in a feel-good mood. Made me relax into the day. Made me feel good.
