Prince, Pop Life [Single] (1985)
I used to have a heap of Prince singles – 12” and 7” – sometimes the same song on both formats even. I was pretty into it all and there were always different versions and different takes, different B-Sides, remixes, etc. But I’ve traded in a few of my Prince singles recently – I still have some. And this was a happy find (I thought I’d flicked it on). I’m more and more into the song Pop Life these days. It wasn’t always one of my favourites – but there’s something I really dig about it now, just a perfect, classy pop song. A great feel. A good lyric. It feels perfectly paced, correct. Spot on. And I always loved the cover to this single – probably the reason I bought it back in the day. Having just read Sheila E’s memoir (recommended) I’m going back through anything and everything she was involved with – and this song has her great drum-feel as a crucial part of it.
