Sharon O’Neill, Foreign Affairs (1983)
When I wrote my book about favourite NZ songs – On Song – loads of people told me all about what I should have included. And I always said “that was #31” – you know, just missed out, etc. But if there was ever a song I should have included – and didn’t – it’s Maxine by Sharon O’Neill. I love the song – that alone would be a good reason for its inclusion (in some cases that was what got a song over the line in terms of being part of the line-up for the finished book) but it really is a great song. And Sharon is a great writer and singer. I grew up with this album so it’s been fun revisiting it, a recent purchase. I get asked – still – now and then if there’ll be a volume two of On Song (there won’t). But hypothetical if – if there were – Maxine would be in that book. Obviously.
