The Third Eye – Tuatara Temple of Taste: DJ Set (Friday, March 4)

djThe Third Eye – Tuatara Temple of Taste is kicking off a regular Friday series hosting DJs. Each night will be a different record-collecting/playing enthusiast showing off some aspect of their collection.

I’m honoured to have the first shot at it, net Friday, which is also the venue’s first birthday.

My night is called The Story of Funk, Soul, Jazz, Blues and Groove – and if you think that’s a long title, well, it’s a long story…and next Friday you’ll hear part of it. I want to play some of my favourite tracks from the old-school R’n’B world, a bit of 70s funk and 60s soul too, some 90s hip-hop perhaps and even one or two fragments of “cheesy” pop. It’s all about groove and soul…tunes with heart. Staples.

So expect a bit of Louis Jordan’s playful bounce, some of Ahmad Jamal’s class – but also those big, infectious radio tunes from the Stax and Motown labels…maybe a bit Ray Charles and to follow? Well it could be Steely Dan or The Commodores, might be The Meters. There’ll definitely be some Dr. John (always the right time…) All of them parts of the story…

The following week will see a new DJ doing a different thing altogether. It’s going to be fun.

6pm-9pm Fridays, kicking off next week with the birthday bash for The Third Eye. And the opening chapter in The Story of Funk, Soul Jazz, Blues and Groove.
