The Goodies – The Final Series
The Complete LWT Series
In one of the saddest “Victory Laps” of all time (of all time) The Goodies took their unique brand of madness and mirth (or “Monty Python for kids” as one wag dubbed it) from an 8-season run throughout the 1970s with the BBC to one final, stinking season on LWT.
I grew up with this show. Loved it. The fast-forwarded action, the silly songs, the dumb innuendo (is there really any other kind?) and the high-concept/low-budget stupidity of it all.
Comedy dates. We all know that. And to watch this again now – the 1980s were just getting going – it feels trapped in the 1960s. That isn’t the real reason this is an embarrassment, although it’s hard to get a proper purchase on this kind of slapstick now. Mildly anarchic but really just a grind to the end.
You wait, you hope for jokes. You roll your eyes. You wait, you hope for the fun kind of silliness, you didn’t realise you had that many drunk uncles and that many 21sts.
Some things are best remembered where you left them, and kept there to stay.
The Goodies – particularly in their final, lacklustre season – deserve to live on in your mind in the 1970s and 80s. And nothing more. For the truth is it’s ultimately a whole lot less.
I (re)watched this so you don’t have to.
This final ride was an empty gesture.
