BBC Radio 1
Though it’s usually worth checking out it’s been a while since I’ve been really taken with one of the BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix playlists/shows – enter: The Avalanches. They’ve dropped a classic – brimming with colourful musical ideas, in a way to complement and match their own albums and collage-of-sound ethos. Here Frank Zappa and Paul McCartney rub shoulders with Moondog and Madlib, The analog synthesiser afro-beat
fusion-funk of William Onyeabor leads in noise collages by Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore and Lee Ranaldo. None of it makes sense on paper – all of it makes sense on record.
As with Nicolas Jaar’s entry to the series – a classic – this is one that I’m playing over and again. And just wanted to recommend for anyone who hasn’t yet caught onto it. Click that link above where you can stream and
check out the whole playlist also.
And check out the band’s recently released Wildflower too, a cracker also. But even if that wasn’t to your taste you’ll find much to like with their BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix.
