So, as per the rules of this challenge – going through the book and listening to albums I’ve never previously heard – I just checked out Black Metal by Venom. I am not disappointed that I did. But I also don’t care at all. This could sum up my mood towards a lot of the music I’ve endured over the years. And so if Venom was a crucial thing to you back in the day, or still, I’m not trying to be a jerk when I say this – but I simply don’t care if I ever hear this again. And don’t feel I needed to check it out. But I’ve done it. I’ve ticked it off the list.
Yeah-yeah, I get that this was deemed influential and therefore important but sometimes you can’t hear the importance if you didn’t hear it at the time. And you don’t care about the influence if you’ve already made your way to whatever it allegedly influenced.
I’ve also – largely – done my time with thrash, and most certainly with the toe in the icy waters of black metal. I like some metal still, of course but it’s never the go-to genre.
And this just didn’t mean much to me.
