I hadn’t ever heard an Orange Juice album – but I know the songs; I was hipped to them only later though, the compilation Edwyn Collins & Orange Juice: A Casual Introduction 1981/2001 was the thing that set it all off for me. By then I’d heard some Edwyn Collins songs I liked a lot and had heard of Orange Juice, this one-stop-shop would do the trick for a bit. And it did. And if I dipped an extra toe or two in the water I certainly never went deeper than the ankle.
So now I’m enjoying Orange Juice’s second album – its title representative of a lot now, borrowed for books and compilations and DJ-nights and so evocative of the era…
And the music’s good. Very good.
And I have to figure it’s aged well – I mean some of it is brand new to me (some of it I knew from the compilations and soundtracks and things) and it holds up nicely.
I’m not sure I had to hear this one – I think my casual intro has served me well enough. But I’m not bummed out that I did eventually dig a little deeper.
