The 1001 Albums Challenge # 76: Sister Sledge – “We Are Family”

I have never listened to a Sister Sledge album – until now. And after playing We Are Family a heap I am wondering why. I mean, I always knew it was CHIC that was musically driving the group, and as a Chic/Nile Rodgers fan that should have had me curious. I guess I figured a few medley-hits here and there would do. Actually, the album’s ubiquitous title track could seem off-putting but He’s The Greatest Dancer is still killer-good, and as album opener it really sets things off here.

There’s some nice balladry too – schmaltz (but just perfect).

I’m loving this. It’s like new favourite albums status nearly. And yes, even We Are Family (the song) is getting the nod. It makes way more sense here – in the context of the album, with its friends – than isolated at a shitty wedding you never wanted to be at with a shitty DJ or whatever…

I’m going through the book, 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die, and playing all of the albums I haven’t (previously) heard. It’s a pointless goal, but it’s my goal…
