He’s known now as Jorge Ben Jor but this record was released when he was still Jorge Ben – though he was born Jorge Duilio Lima Menezes. And though I’d heard of África Brasil I had not, until this challenge, ever heard it. And man it’s a cracker. So good! Reminds me of discovering Arthur Verocai’s self-titled album, which is not to say the albums soundalike, just a similar experience for me – that magical one of ‘how have I not heard this?’ And then just diving on in for the many repeat-plays.
I had heard Taj Mahal, the song that Rod Stewart “borrowed” for a crucial part of his Da Ya Think I’m Sexy? – it was released in the early 70s by Ben but he re-recorded his own song for this 1976 set.
That was the only thing I knew though – now I’m sold. Such a great vibe to this. Again, one of the reasons the 1001 Albums Challenge is (so) worthwhile.
I’m going through the book, 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die, and playing all of the albums I haven’t (previously) heard. It’s a pointless goal, but it’s my goal…
