I had never really listened to Tangerine Dream and I don’t know why. I mean, beyond the fact that there’s nearly 200 albums across 50 years or whatever; hard to know where to start. Well, get this, I started, just recently, with a movie soundtrack from the 1980s – a completely random thing, just some guy that knew I loved soundtrack albums was parting with the last of his records and flicked it my way. So I was into that. And it reminded me that though I knew about Tangerine Dream and knew vaguely their sound and some of the ideas around their shows and albums I hadn’t really listened.
Some more time went by.
And then I got to Phaedra only as part of this challenge. Geezus! But the opening, title track was so sublime I played that through three times in a row before moving on to the rest of the album.
Totally in my wheelhouse.
I love it when you not only find a new favourite but think after that you can’t believe you hadn’t heard it earlier. All the time you think you might have wasted. Well that doesn’t matter of course. Time is an abstract concept. You’ll never be more aware of that (within the scheme of modern life) than when lolling about listening to some magic like this.
I’m going through the book, 1000 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die, and playing all of the albums I haven’t (previously) heard. It’s a pointless goal, but it’s my goal…
