Another Bee Gees album that’s new to me – and it’s becoming a firm favourite. It’s a bit like how I am with the Carpenters really – took a while to admit that my love ran deeper than just a “guilty pleasure”-inclusion of a Greatest Hits album. That said, I’ve got a lot of the catalogue to dig through. I have heard a few of the Bee Gees’ original studio albums, and I have a few favourites already but I’d never heard this.
Funny, the big hit from this – the lead single and opening track (and surely one of the brothers’ most covered songs) is How Can You Mend A Broken Heart. And maybe it’s because there are so many killer versions of it but I really don’t care too much for their version here. I warm to it about 2/3s of the way through the song.
But everything else on here is pretty terrific. Just great pop songwriting – and arranging.
