And I know plenty of other stuff by Chicago – but I’d never heard this, their debut album right through. Until just recently. It’s a curio, as anything from the past is – ultimately. But there’s a lot in this. So it’s deserved several listens, not just one and then a wee write-up; I’ve played this a bunch and will continue to. I don’t love it all – some of it is messy and strange, dated I guess. But it’s fascinating.
And the proof is here that when Chicago was really cooking – esp. in the early days – they had something.
I was always more into Blood, Sweat & Tears (and kinda still am) but this is as a better, more interesting album than the BS&T albums.
Some great horns – great charts, great blowing. But some cool songs too. But then there’s things like Free Form Guitar.
What happened Chicago? More of this would have been better than the slop that got served up as (enduring radio-hit mush) seconds…
