I am pretty green when it comes to The Incredible String Band. One of those groups I’ve read about more than I’ve listened to. That said, I did read a book about the British psych/folk scene of the 60s/70s and it prompted me to buy a compilation of the String Band’s “hits” – not that they had hits as such, but you know, a Very Best Of-type thing. And it was quite good. I was into it.
But I sorta just feel I missed the boat. Listening to this didn’t mean much to me. Couldn’t hate it, didn’t rate it – sat somewhere in the middle. And that’s the worst place to be with music I reckon. Better to flat out hate something, to write it off, to rip it to bits, be gone, done with. And I can’t do that here. But I’m also not fussed about ever revisiting this, or them. I get the appeal and the influence but they’re one of those bands for me – I missed them and couldn’t quite catch up, and I’ll hear them only in the work they’ve been said to have influenced. Plenty of that to enjoy. Bands like Espers. For instance. And let’s face it, I hardly fucking listen to them now either.
