Funny that I’d never heard this album, only in that I love Skip Spence, the mythology – that amazing solo album of his and so usually, when something like that comes along you work your way back through everything – and yes I’d heard of Moby Grape and heard some of their stuff, and Jefferson Airplane too of course.
But again, I would have, without hearing it, consigned Moby Grape (the album) to history’s dustbin. Not for me. Not needed. Etc.
Not the case. It lives and breathes and it shook me up listening to it. These (sorts of) albums are 50 years old now and counting.
And to be mesmerised by that fact and the albums contents, well that’s truly something. That and how we can find the whole album on YouTube (or Spotify, or whatever your service of choice is). Well, for all the worries in the world it’s a pretty magical time – read about an album you’ve never heard previously and just dial it up, there it is. Sit down with a favourite book and a cup of coffee, take it in. Take all of it in. Whatever else goes wrong on the day is yet to happen but it’s started well at least.
I’m going through the book, 1000 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die, and playing all of the albums I haven’t (previously) heard. It’s a pointless goal, but it’s my goal…
