The 1001 Albums Challenge # 131: Girls Against Boys – “Venus Luxure No. 1 Baby”

So, every now and then when I’m wondering why I’m still going through this book and trying to listen to every album listed that I haven’t previously heard something genuinely surprising will come along. There’s been albums that are great by artists I thought I didn’t care about, there’s been some things, too, that I’d never heard of. Sometimes, most often, I’ve at least heard of the artist – maybe I’ve pre-judged, maybe it just wasn’t for me at the time.

But I’ll cop to something here – I had never heard of Girls Against Boys. At all. I didn’t know Venus Luxure No. 1 Baby. And so I just went into this blind. Read the entry while listening to the album. Loved it. Love it!

On another day I might have spotted the Fugazi connection, or gone down that rabit hole, followed a link to side-projects and such. But despite liking Fugazi I had never known about this band, nor this album.

And that’s the kind of genuine surprise-moment that I’m hoping for while wading out this challenge.

There’s been enough to keep me at it – and nowhere near enough terrible albums to put me off it. (Presumably I’d already heard so many of those in my normal listening…)

But this is a new one to dig. A new album for me. And that’s always a treat. As much (or even more) of a treat as finding a brand new album is finding something from the past you never knew about but totally dig straight away. Here’s the one for today.

I’m going through the book, 1000 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die, and playing all of the albums I haven’t (previously) heard. It’s a pointless goal, but it’s my goal…
