ZZ Top: Goin’ 50

ZZ Top Goin’ 50 Rhino/Warner Bros. Of all the 1969-based anniversaries – so many albums turning 50 and being reissued with bonus tracks and ephemera – my favourite 50th might be the fact that ZZ Top has been a band, the very same band even for 50 goddamn years. That’s a lot of boogie.

ZZ Top: Live – Greatest Hits From Around The World

ZZ Top Live – Greatest Hits From Around The World Suretone Records There was that awesome record from five years ago now, a helluva ‘comeback’ from a band that’s never really gone away. Since then though they’ve been stroking their beards around the world playing the hits – first a live DVD from Montreux, 2013 […]

In-Yr-End-O: Come Again? – The Frank And Filthy Song Lyrics Hiding in Plain Sight Deep Inside Your Favourite Pop Songs

You don’t often hear very good jokes on the radio. Well, I don’t. But then, I don’t often listen to the radio…I do remember hearing one I liked: A woman goes in to a bar and asks the barman for a “double entendre” So he gave her one. Off for a walk after, listening to […]

ZZ Top: Live at Montreux 2013

ZZ Top Live at Montreux 2013 Eagle Vision USA What a rarity – same line-up since 1969, pretty much oblivious to trends, still knocking it out of the park and with a recent record as good as almost anything else in their catalogue here’s ZZ Top with a faultless setlist. If you never liked them […]

The Vinyl Countdown # 1206

ZZ Top, Eliminator (1983) I’ve got all the very early ZZ Top stuff – which is kick-ass good, still discovering gems. And their most recent album was pretty great too. But I can’t lie – the first thing I knew about ZZ Top was this album. Maybe you’re supposed to rise above and ignore the […]

The Vinyl Countdown # 1451

ZZ Top, La Futura (2012) Yes, yes, I’ve reviewed this album already – so I have little to add here. Other than to say I bought this – double vinyl even. And I’m loving it. Playing it a lot. It’s got me right back into ZZ Top. And that ain’t no bad thing I reckon. […]

ZZ Top: La Futura

ZZ Top La Futura American Recordings It’s a welcome return with this being the first ZZ Top album in nearly a decade. Road-tight, weathered, battered, gnarled and gnarly this band rages on with Billy Gibbons sounding like the voice of boogie-blues; a glorious croak that feels hundreds of years old and yet on the superb […]
