RNZ Reviews: December 2018

Once a month or so I have a chat on RNZ on their Afternoons show with Jesse Mulligan. These things start – randomly and stop in much the same way. I hope to keep doing this. For a while at least. I think I started in December of 2015, so now nearly three years into  it. Last year I […]

Natalie Prass: The Future And The Past

Natalie Prass The Future And The Past ATO Records I so loved Natalie Prass’ 2015 self-titled debut. Strong songs, a great voice, clever – quirky – arrangements, but this sense of tradition and adhering to it, conventional song structures; a tremendous collaboration between her and friend, producer and multi-instrumentalist, Matthew E. White.

Shelby Lynne & Allison Moorer Not Dark Yet SILVER CROSS  RECORDS It’s the first album-length collaboration from sisters Shelby Lynne and Allison Moorer – ten songs, nine of them covers, and just 37 minutes. It’s a harrowing, but lovely little ride through dark emotions. Plenty of baggage here. A cover of Townes Van Zandt’s Lungs, […]

Stubs: #182 – First Aid Kit, Wellington, 2012

Every other year there’s an Arts Festival and there’s always some good acts – sometimes you’re blown away over and again…Well it was great to see First Aid Kit, they were very good. Amazing voices, but I remember thinking they needed a really great backing band…it could have been so much better – still a […]

Sisters: Film

Sisters Director: Jason Moore Little Stranger/Everyman Pictures/Universal Pictures It would be easy, I’m sure, for someone to tell you that Sisters – a vehicle built entirely for the dazzling but effortless chemistry between and individual talents of Tina Fey and Amy Poehler – was lazy, crude, cheap, silly. But it’s still fun – and importantly […]
