Erik Wøllo / Michael Stearns: Convergence

Erik Wøllo / Michael Stearns Convergence Projek Records I found this record recently in a beautiful fluke – well, a routine search for ambient/space records I guess. What a find. I knew Michael Stearns’ fine work – particularly his score for Baraka (and its ‘sister’ films). He made ambient electronic music in the late 1970s […]

Hedvig Mollestad Trio: Ding Dong. You’re Dead.

Hedvig Mollestad Trio Ding Dong. You’re Dead. Rune Grammofon I might not have been there for every single album, and I’ve only reviewed half of them – but I am definitely a fan of Norway’s Hedvig Mollestad Trio. Formed in 2009 by guitarist Mollestad, with bassist Ellen Brekken and drummer Ivar Loe Bjørnstad, the trio […]

Susanne Sundfør: Self Portrait Original Soundtrack [EP]

Susanne Sundfør Self Portrait Original Soundtrack [EP] Bella Union Susanne Sundfør’s latest release is the soundtrack to a documentary film about the anorexic photographer Lene Marie Fossen. The film sounds compelling, the movie’s trim album score will take you part of the way there. Over simple, evocative piano pieces – some with slight choral undertones […]

R.I.P. Jon Christensen

Jon Christensen has died, aged 76. The Norwegian drummer was one of the greats of Euro jazz working with Jan Garbarek, Bobo Stenson, Tomasz Stanko and many others. It wasn’t just European jazz artists that he worked with – though he was a staple of the ECM label. That of course meant he worked with […]

Arve Henriksen: Towards Language

Arve Henriksen Towards Language Rune Grammofon The calligraphic waft of Arve Henriksen’s trumpet is its own woozy, ethereal fug – through his horn and with his occasional vocalisations he has, over a double-handful of records (recording prolifically) created his own language – an ambient-jazz that is all at once hypnotic and yet hard to grasp. […]

Bushman’s Revenge: Thou Shalt Boogie

Bushman’s Revenge Thou Shalt Boogie Rune Grammofon Somehow this Norwegian group manages to combine quiet, reflective, tranquil nearly-jazz (Waltz Me Baby, Waltz Me All Night Long) with post-Hendrix wig-outs (Kugeln und Kraut) combining vestiges of psychedelic rock, prog, and metal to offer elements of Cream-meets-Sabbath and King Crimson-jams-with-Sun Ra. This is the band’s sixth record, […]

Huntsville: Past Increasing, Future Receding

Huntsville Past Increasing, Future Receding Hubro Records Norwegian trio Huntsville, comprised of Ivar Grydeland (guitar and effects), Ingar Zach (percussion and effects) and Tonny Kluften (bass), create a sprawling ambient jazz that trickles into place from drones, gradually creeping towards the noir soundscapes of The Necks with improvised ideas fleshed out by triggered effects. In […]
