Flying Lotus: Presents Infinity “INFINITUM” – Maida Vale Session (ep)

Flying Lotus Presents Infinity “INFINITUM” – Maida Vale Session (ep) Warp Records Much as I love the work of Flying Lotus – the work he’s inspired and the work he creates – I find it hard to make it through one of his albums these days; too dense, takes too much time, there’s an emotional […]

Gig Review: Thundercat (February 3, Wgtn)

Thundercat San Fran Wednesday, February 3 Thundercat is a freak! He’s got the jazz-noodling from the 70s/80s down pat; he’s like all of your favourite session stars from the fusion era and (slightly) beyond – and all at once. He’s like the best example of the worst nightmare that is the session guys running away […]

Lapalux: Lustmore

Lapalux Lustmore Brainfeeder Stuart Howard – as Lapalux – impressed me with his debut full-lengther, Nostalchic and that sonic journey continues here, with some smoother corners, gentler bends, less glitchy and twitchy and still, very much, the antidote to pretentious or thoughtless (try-hard or not at all even trying) “club” music. This is that kind […]

Thundercat: The Beyond/Where The Giants Roam

Thundercat The Beyond/Where The Giants Roam Brainfeeder Thundercat – aka Stephen Bruner – has contributed to a handful of the very best albums in recent years, collaborating with Kendrick Lamar, Flying Lotus and Kamasi Washington (which means he’s already played on the best album of 2015) and if his leathery-liquid bass lines have been a […]

Flying Lotus: Two Laneway Sideshows (2015)

Sure to be one of the highlights of next year’s Laneway Festival with his You’re Dead! album among the very finest of 2014’s long-play releases, Flying Lotus will also perform sideshows at Auckland’s Powerstation (Wednesday, January 28) and Wellington’s Shed 6 (Thursday, January 29). These will be must-see events – a wonderful audio/visual blend.

Flying Lotus: You’re Dead!

Flying Lotus You’re Dead! Warp Records Limited Every two years since 2006 Stephen Ellison returns with new music under his Flying Lotus alias. Every two years he ups his game, relocates the playing field, changes the rules – and those already in the know and already following look for clues in the leaked tracks and […]

Mono/Poly: Golden Skies

Mono/Poly Golden Skies Brainfeeder Part of the L.A. beat scene, Charles Dickerson might even be something of a tourist – recording (sporadically) as Mono/Poly, remixing Flying Lotus, hinting and teasing at his own signature sound but so obviously (still) taking beats and pieces from friends and competitors, still searching for that sound – something the […]

Taylor McFerrin: Early Riser

Taylor McFerrin Early Riser Brainfeeder/Border Yes, Taylor McFerrin is the son of Bobby McFerrin and actually Early Riser, whilst a debut album, has been around – or bits of it have at least – for quite some time. So this is more a case of the end-result; an album that’s been honed, sat on. The […]

Teebs: Estara

Teebs Estara Brainfeeder/Border Mtendere Mandowa returns – as Teebs – with sophomore album, Estara. And though you may mourn for the adventurousness of his debut, this shows a thoughtful progression from yet another Flying Lotus protégé. Okay, so there’s still plenty to suggest the album’s sound was formed from the wind beneath the wings of […]

Cuttooth: Cuttooth

Cuttooth Cuttooth 4 Lux Recordings Cuttooth by Cuttooth is the work of Nick Cooke and though it’s straight to late-night future bleeps and beats, Cuttooth cuts his path via the hip-hop soul-noir stylings that so many of us first heard when trip-hop was first being uttered as a concept and DJ Shadow was providing the […]

Gaslamp Killer: Breakthrough

Gaslamp Killer Breakthrough Brainfeeder William “Gaslamp Killer” Bensussen has been playing sets and releasing EPs for a few years but Breakthrough is his semi-ironically/semi-accurately named debut album. If you’ve enjoyed the music of Alphabethead (and if you haven’t – you should) then you might find something to like in Gaslamp Killer’s ever-so-slightly-similar approach. You could […]

Lapalux: Nostalchic

Lapalux Nostalchic Brainfeeder/Border It might be a bedsit identity, but 25 yo Stuart Howard, aka Lapalux, has thrown everything at the music, in tiny, cramped conditions – kitchen-sink and all. Nostalchic is released on Flying Lotus’ Brainfeeder imprint. For his retooled version of Aphex Twin/Boards Of Canada/Squarepusher electronica he’s very clearly hip-hop and dubstep inspired […]
