The Beast: Revisiting John Bonham’s Glory

I recently finished reading Beast: John Bonham and the Rise of Led Zeppelin. Look, it’s not great. Don’t rush to read it – but as is so often the case with a music bio, I loved the journey it helped to facilitate. My criticism of the book is that there’s not enough of interest in […]

R.I.P. Sam Lay

Sam Lay has died. He was 86. The blue drumming great played on dozens of important sides for Chess Records and in recent years was a living legend of the Alligator Records stable, one of the last links back to the classic, vital blues masters. Lay played with Muddy Waters and Howlin’ Wolf. And recorded […]

Unfinished Intro To A Life-Long Essay Celebrating Drums

My favourite underrated drummer ever – having to name just one – would be Stevie Wonder. I say this because a lot of people probably still don’t know that Stevie Wonder played the drums on a lot of his great recordings. And would always get up and jam live. I went to a drum-clinic something like […]

Charlie Was Their Darling: The Greatest Drummer for The Greatest Rock and Roll Band

This was originally published by RNZ Charlie Watts was the drummer everyone tried to play like – and no one could ever quite do it. He was the reason The Rolling Stones remained a vital live act into their seventh decade together. He was their engine. And if you wish to even – for a […]

In Praise of Charlie Watts

I think Charlie Watts is more than a wee bit great. Like fucking brilliant. Like, one of the best drummers ever. In fact I wrote about Charlie in my wee e-book called Drummers You Just Can’t Beat. But if you want a bigger book about how great Charlie Watts is (my e-book is about 19 […]

R.I.P. Roger Hawkins

Roger Hawkins has died. The legendary session drummer was 75. A member of The Swampers, a supergroup of session stalwarts, the backbone of the Muscle Shoals rhythm section, Hawkins was one of most tasteful, dependable players – no ego in dominance, all empathy for the tune. Even if you don’t recognise the name you have […]
