Ana Gasteyer: sugar & booze

Ana Gasteyer sugar & booze Henry’s Girl, Inc. The multi-talented Ana Gasteyer was one of SNL’s star-players across the late 1990s. Often music was a focus too, either with her original characters (Bobbie Mohan-Culp the opera-singing high school teacher) and in her brilliant impressions (Barbra Streisand and the best Celine Dion ever).

Eric Clapton: Happy Xmas

Eric Clapton Happy Xmas Bushbranch/Surfdog Never has the divide between how the generations treat their heroes been as obvious as the fact that Eric Clapton, in 2018, gets to release a Christmas Album with, wait for it, a “techno” version of Jingle Bells.

The Vinyl Countdown # 776

Ray Conniff, Here We Come A-Caroling (1966) Every year I buy a new (old) Christmas album. It’s something that’s happened the last few years now – something a bit kitschy or whatever to spin on the turntable. I look for things by artists I actually like: Willie Nelson, Harry Belafonte, Tony Bennett…they’re all in there…this […]

The Vinyl Countdown # 982

Willie Nelson, Pretty Paper (1979) I’m starting to warm to Christmas albums – just a select few, mind. And only now and then. And only in December. That’s okay, right? Well, fuck, even if it’s not – like I give a shit what you think. Willie Nelson is almost always great. And to prove it […]

V/A: Putumayo Presents Acoustic Christmas

Various Artists: Putumayo Presents: Acoustic Christmas Putumayo World Music/Ode I’m not really a fan of Christmas albums, I tend to hate compilations that have the word ‘Acoustic’ in the title and I can’t stand Zooey Deschanel singing (or acting for that matter, but here that is another matter altogether) and yet I’m somewhat won-over by […]

The Vinyl Countdown # 1217

Harry Belafonte, To Wish You A Merry Christmas (1958) It was probably last year more than this year that I really developed a mini-obsession with Harry Belafonte, I had always listened to him – but only ever just a bit. Last year I got hooked, big time. That wonderful voice, so many great rhythms too […]
