I’ve mulled it over far too long – and yet, as I’m about to start this, about to (finally) start a podcast it’s all very much up in the air (still). But I have to get it started. Or else it won’t…well, start. It hasn’t happened so far – because I haven’t made it happen. I’ve used every partial excuse going. I’m busy writing. People might not want to talk to me in that capacity (or in any). No one will listen – so there’s really no point. I’ll get busy elsewhere and drop the ball. I don’t really know what I’m doing.
All fears and distractions of course.
Technically, it’s a bit beyond me – and when I say ‘a bit’ I am being far too kind to myself. I’m not one to sit and work things out in a mechanical sense. I also don’t like asking for help. That makes the worst of both worlds.
But some help has arrived, and I have decided I need to jump onto/into a new platform. Try a new thing.
I’ve been pretty obsessed with listening to podcasts the last couple of years – and it’s been at least that long that I’ve wanted to do one. I’m not concerned at all with missing the boat – I seem to do that all the time. I just want to do some talking, record it and send it out there. For myself. And hopefully for you all too…
The loose structure is that it’ll be an interview-based thing. I’ll talk to musicians. But also venue-owners/operators, managers, other writers, music fans – and from there I want to go away from music also. To comedians (even a search to see if we actually have any in New Zealand might be a start). To authors, actors, filmmakers – and arts-focussed people. Creatives. (Though I don’t like that as a standalone term).
Most recently I’ve been devouring the You Must Remember This podcast (recommended) and I still tune in most weeks, twice a week, for Marc Maron’s WTF (I at least check in to see who he’s speaking with). I’ve returned to The Bret Easton Ellis Podcast because sometimes it’s a great topic, or topics. And he has some good guests. He’s indulgent but there’s a way in which he celebrates that indulgence that feels honest for/about the medium.
I’m going to fire my podcast up in the next couple of weeks – I’m writing this teaser/intro now as a hold-me-to-doing-it note to self that I’m also sending out, message in a bottle-style, to whoever else might read it.
There are other podcasts I’ve learned from and enjoyed – including a few local successes. Jonny Potts’ Year of Reading Massively and Pip Adam’s Better off Read are two I’d recommend, I’ve enjoyed what I’ve heard. And I loved the first season of The Worst Idea of All Time and am catching up on season two currently.
Internationally there are so many others – and though I’m not really trying to take from any as a model I guess, in a sense, the WTF podcast is an obvious antecedent. There it is now, towering above all other podcasts. That’s been daunting and part of the pressure for me I think in worrying about what I’m aiming – or not aiming – to do. And as a result I’ve ended up doing nothing. So it’s time to do something. Give it a go. Get it started. I wanna be, as the song says, startin’ somethin’.
So I have the first couple of people lined up that I want to talk to. And I reckon I’ll share a bit of a yarn about the things I’m doing too – reviews, recommendations – but, having never done this before I am interested to know about some of the things you’d like to hear. Potential topics of discussion and/or interview subjects? Segment ideas? Do you want to hear new independent music?
What would get you tuning in to the SweetMan PodCast?
