This one is a conversation with Yvonne Lorkin, she’s a Hawke’s Bay-based wine-writer, taster, judge, critic and enthusiast. She’s also behind WineFriend, a subscription service that lets you present preferences allowing Sweetman Podcast: Episode 98 – Yvonne Lorkin to hand-select the right wine for you. She provides individual wines with tasting notes, personal recommendations and the interactive experience is designed so that your feedback assists in finding the right wine matches just for you.
I hadn’t met Yvonne before but we had corresponded a bit on Facebook. I was interested in talking to her for many reasons. I’d seen her TV show, Thirsty Work, read her columns, heard her giving tips and notes on RNZ – and I’d heard about WineFriend. So I was curious to know how she’d built her brand. I also knew she had a background of working in the music industry. The headlines a couple of years back told of how she had insured her taste buds for $1 million.
I also knew she’d grown up in Hawke’s Bay, left to work and live elsewhere and then returned.
So quite apart from her experience and expertise I was interested in talking to her about growing up in Hawke’s Bay, her memories and also how she moves between the radio, TV and print/online platforms; it’s three very different ways of “writing”, of critiquing.
We had a great chat. I learned a heap about wine. And it was great to connect. I hope you enjoy hearing this conversation.
