This is a conversation with Luke Buda. He’s a member of the bands, The Phoenix Foundation and TEETH, he’s also recorded solo albums and works as a film composer scoring Netflix TV show and several of New Zealand’s best-loved movies from recent years.
We talked right through the now nearly 20-year odyssey of The Phoenix Foundation, the film soundtrack work, his solo records, the new band TEETH. We take a wee break to talk about Mark Knopfler and then back to The Phoenix Foundation.
It’s a great chat – some great road-stories and a stirring meditation around the glass ceiling of the New Zealand arts/music scene.
I’ve known Luke for a while, we’re in the same neighbourhood now, kids at the same school and so on…but I first met and interviewed him back when he released his debut solo album, a few years into the career of The Phoenix Foundation. It was great to have him share the full story of the band, from his point of view – including the highlights of playing at Glastonbury and appearing on the Jools Holland TV show.
I hope you enjoy our conversation.
