Sweetman Podcast: Episode 45 – Dean Hewison

dean2Welcome to episode 45 of Sweetman Podcast – my conversation with Dean Hewison. Dean is a Wellington-based theatre and film writer and director. He co-wrote and directed the 2012 feature film, How To Meet Girls From A Distance. He has been a regular participant and – regularly – award winner in the 48 Hour Film Contest. He’s written and devised material for theatre as well as directing Lungs for Circa Theatre, late in 2016. He’s worked – several times – with Aidee Walker, subject of Sweetman Podcast # 39 (and in fact the conduit for that conversation).girls

Dean and I worked together nearly 20 years ago behind the counter of The CD Store. He was our DVD expert when the medium was shiny and new. He and I talked about music and films and writing – and at the time I was aiming to get somewhere with music criticism and the like (jury’s not only still out on that, they’re about to find out they’ve been replaced by a Buzzfeed-styled Listicle) and Dean was concocting plays where the emotions of a person’s head where depicted on stage as characters, where a landlord’s head turned up inside one of the household appliances, where a man’s penis narrated his sexual flailings and failings. I thought he was mad – but possibly brilliant. He was a good friend too. It’s been wonderful following his career blossom. This conversation was a chance to reconnect as well as to talk through his influences and aims, the work he’s done and where he’s heading…

Here’s his recent short film, Judgment Tavern
