I reckon Gerry Paul was one of the first people I asked to be on the podcast…back some three years ago. I would bump into him – he’s always on the run, between gigs, between albums, either playing a show, or making sure someone else is…
He finally slowed down long enough for a chat with me just a few years after I first asked!
I’ve known Gerry for a long time – first as one of the members of the band Grada and from there as a children’s entertainer, tour promoter, event organiser, session player and as one of Cuba Street’s zany characters to bump into.
In recent years he has been the co-creator of Coastella, one of the event organisers of CubaDupa and just next week he debuts a gigantic Irish Festival across three cities in New Zealand featuring music, comedy and films.
Gerry doesn’t ever seem to slow down. And he has some fantastic yarns. I was lucky to catch some of them here – including us talking a lot about John Prince (actually ahead of the announcement that he would be touring New Zealand). So I mentioned to Gerry – and now to you – my poem about the time “John Prine Showed Me His Pussy on Instagram”.
From touring the world and working with legendary musicians to bringing incredible talent to New Zealand (like Kelly Joe Phelps) Gerry Paul has seen a lot, done a lot and he remembered to pack plenty of his best stories on the day he finally sat still long enough for me to press record and point a microphone in his general direction.
I had a blast. And I hope you do too hearing this…
