Sweetman Podcast: Episode 14 – Emily Writes

emily-as - CopyEpisode 14 of Sweetman Podcast is my chat with Emily Writes. She’s a “mummy blogger” – though she’s reclaiming that; people say blogger like it’s a dirty word or you’re less of a writer; people say Mummy Blogger to perhaps further invalidate…

Emily Writes writes. Funnily enough. She’s been a journalist. She’s moved into blogging and her own site is the home to her thoughts and experiences around raising her two children. The New Zealand Herald republishes some of her work and she’s recently taken on a role as a blogger – or online columnist, if you prefer – for The Women’s Weekly.

Emily and I talk about writing – a lot. We both write lots. And we talk a load about blogging, journalism, writing…they’re all (almost) the same to us…

We talk about the nasty comments and moderating; about having a point of view and the passion and fire that’s necessary to charge on with writing; the importance too of trying to have something to say.

Emily is also behind the initiative Ballet Is For Everyone. So we plug that on this episode too.

Finally, Emily’s a friend. We’ve known each other a while, our kids are good buddies – but as has been the case with other episodes here, there’s something really special about getting to sit down with a friend and talk about what they do, not just who they are. So often of course who they are is what they do and what they do does inform who they are.

My thanks to Emily for her time. And if you want to search her out on Twitter she’ll write back to you – almost any hour of the day (or night).

I’ve been enjoying the whole series but I particularly liked this episode. There were great observations about the relationship between writer and audience. Cheers
